Do I need a PGCE to teach 14-16 year olds?
No. Any centre offering the AAT in schools can continue to select to the AAT team based on existing and established criteria. Currently it is not compulsory for an AAT tutor to have a PGCE or Cert Education (FE) to become involved in the traditional AAT delivery or to deliver AAT in schools.
It is however generally deemed as good practice for any member of staff to have a teaching qualification in addition to technical competence and the necessary assessor and or verifier awards. When offering AAT in Schools the school will obviously be looking for an assurance that staff have appropriate technical qualifications and some may also insist upon some form of initial teaching or training qualification.
There are a number of 'stepping stone' teacher training and training qualifications which individual staff and centres may wish to consider. The recent changes to 14-19 curriculum and to the LLUK standards for teaching and training professionals now stipulate that all new entrants to the profession must from September 2007 hold initial teacher training qualifications and that all existing staff must undertake teacher training related CPD.
It is imortant to distinguish between AAT centres offering a service to schools to enable young persons to undertake AAT and to individual members of staff considering a full teaching career within a school. The current position is: Neither a Certificate in Education (FE) or a PGCE - Post Compulsory will automatically attract QTS - as requird by most secondary schools when employing staff directly to teach within a school.
This area is quite complex and will form part of a seminar opportunity for all AAT centres during 2007/8.
