AAT in Schools fun workshop
As part of the work on the AAT in Schools project we have produced an activity that centres can run with local schools to raise awareness of AAT and demonstrate some of the skills needed to complete the qualification in a fun and relaxed environment. The activity combines team work, presentation skills and cost accounting. The skills that are needed to complete the workshop tasks would also be needed as part of the AAT's NVQ Level 2 in Accountancy.
We ran the first session at Sutton Coldfield College in December. To tie in with the time of year we had a seasonal scenario where the students had to design and cost out a new outfit for Father Christmas. Each group was given a set of instructions that outlined Father Christmas' requirements and information relating the costs of different materials, staff wages and profit. Each group was given 5 material swatches, coloured pens, glue, glitter and a variety of stationery to put their designs together.
The students worked in groups of five and had two and a half hours to complete the task and then present their designs and costings to Father Christmas, so he could judge which would be the best for him. The AAT arranged prizes for the winning team. The day was a great success and both the students, college and AAT staff present enjoyed the session.
We have put together a number of other scenarios with accounting tasks at different levels.
Scenarios are available with easy, average and hard accounting tasks:
1. A football club needing a new strip
2. Pupils designing their teachers' uniform
3. Britain's Olympic team needing a new tracksuit for the 2008 Olympics.
If you feel this would be something that would help your centre build links with local schools and raise awareness of AAT, then you can down this here, along with guidance notes for facilitators:
