AAT as an alternative to university

The AAT Accounting Qualification is a vocational alternative to studying at university, and a great way to avoid student debt.
Spiralling tuition fees, mounting debts and an overcrowded job market all mean that a degree is no longer guarantees you a well paid job. In fact, research commissioned by AAT predicts that 55% of 2011 graduates will be unemployed or underemployed in jobs where are degree is not necessary.
But vocational qualifications such as the AAT Accounting Qualification can provide a route into a career while you gain a recognised professional qualification and valuable work experience.
The average salary for a recent graduate is £20,500, whereas a newly qualified AAT member can expect to earn an average of £21,600 (actual figure £21,617). Plus, the AAT member will have been earning throughout their training and will have avoided student debt.
Training with AAT also offers
- work-ready, industry specific skills that employers value
- the chance to progress to chartered accountancy with generous exemptions. This can mean you can qualify faster than someone who has gone through the university route.
If you’re deciding whether to study for a degree or a vocational qualification, you will need to consider all your options carefully and make the right choice for you. AAT student member Lewis Camello decided to study the AAT Accounting Qualification rather than go to university – watch the video below to hear his story:
