Chartered Accountancy Professional bodies in the UK

The AAT's close relationship with its four sponsoring bodies means that your AAT qualification will provide you with generous exemptions if you chose to progress to chartered level.

Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)

Full members of the AAT have the opportunity to progress to the CIPFA professional qualification via the AAT Fast Track Module. To qualify for the AAT Fast Track module you will need to complete the Foundation/Certificate, Intermediate/Advanced Certificate and Technician/Diploma levels, including the Implementing auditing procedures and Operating a cash management & credit control system optional units at Technician level. AAT members enrolling on the CIPFA course will complete the module while progressing through the CIPFA qualification to Certificate, Diploma or full membership level.

Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)

The quickest route to qualifying as a Chartered Accountant for AAT students is to Fast-track to the ICAEW's ACA qualification. For more information about the AAT-ACA Fast-track route, contact the ICAEW:

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

AAT students and members can qualify for CIMA's AAT Accelerated Route after completion of the Technician/Diploma level. This will entitle you to claim exemption from the Certificate level and join CIMA's Professional Qualification. One in nine of CIMA's UK students have an AAT background.

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)

AAT full and fellow members who have completed all of the Technician/Diploma level of the NVQ/SVQ in Accounting, may be exempt from two of the five subjects from their Test of Competence level. Students will need to enter into a three year training contract with an ICAS authorised employer. This is the only non-graduate route towards chartered status in Scotland. For more information:

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

AAT members who have completed the Accounting Qualification either NVQ or Diploma will now be exempt from the preliminary stage of the ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) professional examinations.
