Hi Rob,

What level are you studying two or three?? I am currently doing Level Two, I have completed Unit 71, nearly completed Unit 72, just need to finish off the last little bit (if i'd got my finger out I could have had that finished as well by now) and I am currently working on Unit 73 (just started) and I am taking the exam for this in June and if all goes well and I pass I will then be continuing with Level Three.

Before I started the course I hadn't done much to do with Payroll and I defo think that the course has helped me loads.

Good luck, if you like wwe can be Study Buddy's??

Nic

Hi there,

I took ages to find this forum - it is only visible when you sign in. I wanted to do Payroll Level 2 last back end but BPP took ages to send the stuff and by then I was already overloaded with my ACCA studies, so I am doing the Level 2 exam this June (fingers crossed). Who are you using for your tutor? I am considering changing to Premier Training for Level 3 which I want to do in December. They seem to get a good reputation for their accountancy training on the site.

Compared to ACCA, I find some of the AAT stuff a pain - like units 21, 22 & 23. Making people that use computers every day for their work prove that they can log on and save documents etc is just plain daft and I found it a waste of time. My units 22 & 23 seem to be fine and I am waiting on feedback for unit 21. I have done the mock simulations for 71 and 72 so far (although BPP have not yet told me if I need to do the actual ones).

I decided to do the Payroll qualification as I have been doing the payroll for about 25 employees for a couple of years using Sage Payroll but I have not learnt properly how to do payroll manually.

By the way, if you are struggling with the course, I can highly recommend the Inland Revenue Business Support Teams workshops. They are free of charge and hold them on paying your employees, ssp, smp, year end procedures etc. etc. I have done the paying your employees and ssp ones and like to do the year end procedures every year.

Are you doing any other exams this June? Good luck with the study.

Lesley

Hi,
Here is the page to find info on some courses with the inland revenue
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/bst/work.htm.

If you telephone the revenue they will be able to refer you to the correct people. I know they do the courses in defferent venues. I went to high wycombe but my mother in law is going to Slough.
They were really helpful.
I know they do things like starting a business, basic payroll, ect.

Sarah

thanks for the website...
right first question for the payroll experts,,my brains given up already!

in my tutorials it states that when an employee dies (in this unforunate instance 5/10/05) the p45 should be filled in. ok i can handle that, but on the p45 example i have been given even tho the employee died on the 5/10/05 the date given for when the employee left the organisation is the 31/5/05 am i missing something here??

thanks

I would say it is because the employee is/was monthly paid and therefore has been paid until the end of the month and "left" the company at that point. If the employee had been alive and moving on to another company, his/her p45 would have been produced at the normal month end payroll date and had that date even if they'd actually ceased working earlier in the month.

sorry im still a bit confused, the poor fella died in october but the p45 was dated leaving as march.. i understand what youve said to a point but its quite a few months previous to him dying?

Ah!

I read it as died on 10th May (American date format) and p45'd on 31st May. Kinda used to dates in American/European format and often read them both ways. He cannot die in October 05 and be p45'd in May 05 - 5 months before he dies!

Double check the date format but I'm guessing that 10th May and 31st May are the intended dates....

hi,,

do you think maybe the march date is the dat he left his old employment?

hi,,

I honestly think the example has muddled its date formats. I would say he died on 10th May (and the format used is the European/American format) and that his P45 was produced on 31st May and they have used the UK date format.

I'm guessing they print this in Europe and the UK and they have not corrected one of the formats.

Just to be certain, I would say that was the assumption before I answered the question so that your tutor will understand how you got to your reply (and likewise, in an exam should this ever happen).

Hi there

Just saw your answer and I was hopping that you could help me on some queries that I have about Payroll, as I am currently studying and yesterday I had a mental block on my test about pensions (Unit 73) and about overpayments… I was surprised when I saw on the paper the word Stakeholder as in class we haven’t dealt with them (standard, COSR and COMP) my question would be in which category would you put this?
And also how do you process overpayments? How do you deduct them from the employee’s net pay?

Would be grateful if you could help me!

Thanks

I haven't done the AAT Payroll exams but I have done quite a bit of payroll and am happy to answer any questions if I can.
