Hi

I'm hoping someone can help.

My Uncle has asked me to find out approximately how long it would take to do payroll for 150 employees using sage. He is currently looking into processing payroll this way at his place of work and so needs to know how many hours his employee will need to work.

I have no knowledge of using payroll for sage so I was unable to answer his question. On a basis of hours, how many hours would this take from the very start to the finish?

Any help, or estimates would be great.

Thanks
Kelly

Dear Kelly,

I couldn't really say, it really depends how complex the payroll is. I do payroll with Sage software for 25 employees and it takes me around a quarter of an hour to do plus half an hour to work out the overtime hours for each employee. It takes longer when there are lots of changes to student loans, child support agency changes and working out overtime. New starts and leavers take time too. Is the payroll monthly or weekly? Does the payroll employee have to do the personnel role too?

Hi

I use sage payroll to pay 25 weekly employees on avergae after ive gone through there timesheets it takes me approximatly 30 minutes to enter and print all payslips and reports so proba bout an hour in total

When i used to do monthly payroll in my old job on sage it would take even less then that prob bout 30 minutes in total

All depends like previous post how many employees and how complex the payroll is

I do not know the finer details unfortunately. I know the employees are paid on a monthly salary basis but unaware of any deductions etc.

As far as I know the person only has to deal with payroll and nothing else.

Thanks for your help. One more question.

150 employees, paid on a salary basis, monthly. Would you say a reasonable estimate for an employee having to process this would be 10 hours per week to take into account any new starters/leavers and any complications that might happen?

Thanks again for your help.
Kelly

Hi there. It might be worth your uncle getting a quote from a payroll agency unless he particularly wants to employ some-one just for payroll.

As a guide (based on previous work experience in Devon):

Set up fees £20 to £100 depending upon the state of the payroll records at handover.
Processing costs £20 for up to 10 employees, approx £100 for 150 employees. This is per processing period but should include printing of payslips and nominal journals required. Do bear in mind that the simpler the processing, the lower the cost. The firm I worked for had input schedules for the clients which allowed for processing to be just that as any 'oddities' will increase the time spent and, obviously, the cost involved. Some agencies will also arrange for BACS schedules to be produced and/or submit the BACS schedules themselves.

Hope this helps. And a little plug for myself - I am an MIP and do payroll. This can be done off site using email/postal services for hard copies.
