View Full Version : Internet Explorer 7
Anyone else upgraded to the new Internet Explorer 7 yet? Takes a bit of getting used to with the new layout and I spent a fair while trying to find where the favourites tab had gone!
I like the new tabbed Firefox style browsing where you can have multiple sites open simultaneously without having to open a new Window everytime.
One peculiar thing I have noticed though is that text now appears blurry and lacks the sharpness of IE6 - not sure how or why that can be! My monitor resolution hasn't changed so I can only out it down to the IE interface.
I suppose CJC, Dean and all the other Firefox devotees will hate it though! Time will tell and we'll nearly all have to get used to it at some point in the future!
Robert
Hi Robert.
I installed IE7 - my internet stopped working!! I uninstalled it and went back to IE6.

It's strange, but I like it. So far.
Graham
Credit where it's due, I actually think IE7 one hell of an improvement. The interface is miles better and (apparently) security has been improved too. More inportantly for us web builders it's much more compliant with the W3C standards which should reduce the need for all the tricks you have to use to get a site to work properly with IE.
I still think as a user and even more so as a developer that Firefox is better but this is a step in the right direction. Blimey, I said something nice about Microsoft.

I have got slightly fuzzy type as well - wondered if I had been drinking
and yes, I had problems trying to find the favourites button and also refresh!
Overall, I dont think that I particularly like or dislike it!
Claudia
Can't stand explorer, hate coming to work and having to use it - firefox is the ultimate champ!
Well, thank God for that Claudia! I thought I might be the only one with blurry/fuzzy text! Has anyone else noticed this apart from us two?
I'm finding it seriously disconcerting. It seems especially noticable when writing a post for the forum, possibly because of the background colours. Maybe CJC can answer why this should be? Will I be able to sue Mr Gates for damaged eyeseight?!!
When switching away to use Excel or Word it now takes a few seconds to readjust! I might see if I can use system restore to 'roll back' to IE6 'cos my eyes hate this!
Robert
Hi Robert,
the text problem seems to be to do with an option in Tools > Internet options. Under multimedia uncheck "always use clear type for html"
What IE is trying to do is smoothe out the font, but what you end up with is that slightly fuzzy text. If you turn it off it gets a bit crisper again.

Thanks Julian, that does appear better...

I like the new firefox also because you can have several pages open at the same time. It's so annoying though when I forget and close the whole page
I like IE7 because of the tab functions and how it holds the RSS feeds.

Dean
RSS feeds?
Dont know anything about computers, (other than how to use the software) so you are speaking a foreign language in this thread. I think my home computer upgraded automatically, as it looks strange now!

Julian
You're a star thank you - as the song says - I can see clearly now
Geeks - I love 'em.
Claudia
Dean, you are talking geeky gibberish to me too!
Makes you wonder that since hundreds of thousands of other people on the planet won't have such words of wisdom from geeks like Julian ( ) , how they will cope when they experience exactly the same problem while NOT knowing how to fix it?!
Specsavers are gonna love this!
Robert
I've been told about the new IE at work (although I hate IE and use Firefox at home 8) ) and we were told by our IT man that it should come as automatic download on the computer, but I was told this about a week ago and have seen nothing yet ? Do we have to go and download it ourselves from Microsoft ?
Sorry if that is a simple obvious question

It should come through as an automatic update. We had one at work last week and mine at home today.

blurry/fuzzy text! Has anyone else noticed this
Robert
I nearly freaked out when I started using it as I have visual problems anyway. Will have to roll back to IE6 as it is so uncomfortable.
I've found favourites (nearly cried when it first opened) and F5 is great for refreshing.
I've used the phishing 'bit' (sorry, IT terminology escapes me today) switched on and it seems to be slowing everything down. Tips anyone?

Mine's clear and just as fast as the old version. I like it so far, especially the tabs for keeping pages open.

Maybe I need to visit the optician again and adopt a job-like stance! :)

Having used IE7 for over a month now, finally decided I don't like the tabbing and have disabled it. Text is still also quite blurry.
Have been advised by an IT Technician for NTL that IE7 is NOT a good upgrade and many of them don't run it. Also that I can uninstall it and go back to version 6.
What I want to know though, will uninstalling IE7 also uninstall Media Player 11? Though that might not be a bad thing either!
Any thoughts or advice welcome! Come on Chris (CJC) - what's your take on IE7?
Robert
I downloaded IE7 2 weeks ago after reading this and have used it twice when firefox decides to use 90% resources.. even then I closed IE down and restarted firefox - text isn't so blurry on my screen if you deselect some options it goes fine but still the overall feel of the IE7 isn't as nice as IE6 and i'm struggling to find the benefits it brings.
I dislike IE browsers anyway and use firefox mainly.
As far as I know Rob, rolling back versions of IE will not auto rollback Windows media player 11 - although I did roll back intentionally from #11 as it's too security concious.
There are some reasons for me as a developer why IE7 is miles better than IE6. It's far more compliant with the W3C (that's the world-wide web consortium) HTML/CSS standards, so I can be more confident that pages will display the same in IE as they do in other browsers.
I've not really used 7 apart from for testing pages so I've no real opinon as a user. It seems better, but then I like tabbed browsing. It still feels a bit prehistoric compared with Firefox though.
I don't know enough about the black arts of Microsoft to know if it'll uninstall mediaplayer 11, wouldn't have thought so. I use winamp anyway

I've just changed my PC and I'm back with IE 6.
Is there any way I can get IE 7 without waiting for the update to come through?
Helen
You can download it from Microsoft's website, Helen:

Many thanks!
Paul/Rob, RSS feeds are just news feeds/updates from various sites. IE7 holds them in a folder much like the "favorites". Keeps me up to date with what's going on in the world!

Dean
I must say Dean that I do miss your smouldering wit that at times, has had all the subtlety of the stereotypical sledgehammer/walnut scenario!

Is there a way, Chris (!), of having all the tabs refresh - rather than the one being viwed?
Helen
In IE7 right click on a tab you'll get a menu up with "refresh all tabs" somewhere on it. It's the same in Firefox although there it's "reload all tabs". You can tell Micrsoft didn't rip it off Firefox because, er, they changed a word.

Thank you!
Now if I could just find someone to sort my printer...

I'm useless with hardware :)

So it appears am I.
I set up a new pc but the printer needed a USB cable and I had to instal some software. I spent hours faffing around and can't get it to work.
Managed to get a test page out at 5.45 but that was it. Gave up at midnight...
RSS has just become available on the AAT homepage
Just hope the AAT "update" it regularly.

Dean
