Strange private messages

has anyone else had messages from people saying something like 'I'm new here, how's it going?' and then blabbing on about buddah?!
I've had 2 now, won't be very happy if I keep getting more!

I've had them too - I guess the latest form of spam.

Can admin see if people are mass private messaging??

I have received 2 of these both in March - one from a 'Patricia' and one from a 'James'

As you say, Admin should trace these and put a stop to it.

I'm sure the admins are banning IPs used for spamming but these days when everyone's using broadband and getting dynamically assigned IPs that's not going to be terribly effective. As has been mentioned elsewhere, this sort of thing is mostly automated and the only way to really block it is to make people enter a captcha code to stop the bots. Personally, I'd find having to enter a code to post to the forums or send PMs far more irritating than the relatively low levels of spam we get round here.

I cant remember how the sign-up process worked, it was a while ago, but quite a few sites use email validation, where you get sent an email, & then have to click a link in that email to validate the account. Only then will your login & password work.
As this is used when setting up the user account, it should help prevent spam postings & messages.

Hi,

The spam problem is obviously quite an annoyance and I'm currently looking into a more advanced bot protection system for vBulletin, as the default Captcha system doesn't seem to be effective enough.

If you could carry on reporting posts until then it would be a great help.

Thanks for fixing it Simon - it obvoiusly wasn't a major problem, but good it's sorted before it gets worse :)
