Can anyone help please?

I am a bookkeeper for a company which has in the last six months had new computers installed - now operating on a network whereas before there was just one machine. I use Sage Instant accounting. Over the past few months there have been unexplained instances of data being lost - on one occaision I found the whole of the sage data had disapeared! on others it seems to be blocks of data input on a particular day. As a result I have become obssessive about backing up and record the transaction numbers at the end of each day, then check them when I start the next week (I am usually there one day a week) The sage system is now password protected and only myself and the proprietor have the passwords. After being on holiday for a week I went in today and found that the data I had input over the previous three weeks has disapeared and the transaction no shows the last item input as being the one at the close of business three weeks ago. I am certain that the other staff are not tampering with the accounts and cannot understand how it might be possible for someone to make this happen by accident! As this problem did not occur before the new networked computers were installed I am now wondering if there might be some connection! I keep a backup of the sage files on a floppy which I take home with me, and the staff also back up to a gadget like a "Pen" which is supposed to back up the whole system in one go. The computer supplier / installers say they don't know of any reason why there should be a connection. I have worked with sage software for many years and have never come accross anything like this - can anyone shed any light on this? or has anyone had similar experiences? I would welcome any suggestions.

I am not very technically minded, but with several years experience of Sage I feel it would actually be impossible for someone to be deleating previously input transactions without you being able to track the deletions, i.e the transaction numbers would actually move forward (deletions being a new transaction) and not backwards.
I would agree with you that the network installation appears to have something to do with it, have two copies of Sage been installed and you are perhaps being mapped to different copies at different times? Would actually think this is not possible as you shouldn't be able to install Sage twice, but then transactions shouldn't go missing either! Only know about mapping problems as we had a similary problem with one employees work being saved to a directory within their computer and not on to the main server due to mapping problems.
May be worth contacting Sage support for their ideas, before speaking to the network installers.

Good luck

Hi

I currently work with sage line 50 and did so in my last job. My current place of work has a resonably extensive networked sage, but as far as i am aware we've had no problems like youre suggesting.

In my last job we upgraded from version 8 to version 9 and for a while had problems simialr to yours. After many phone calls to sgae cover, we finally discovered the problem was with the sage programme as it had been released before all problems and 'gremlins' had been discovered. They eventually sent us a patch and we only paid a quarter of the price for the upgrade!!

I would suggest contacting sage, or your re-seller if you bought it through an agent. If you have sage cover (which can be expensive) call them as there tech help guys are very good.

Hope this helps.

N

Thankyou both for taking the time to respond to my posting. I have spoken to the installer today, who seems to think that there might be a problem whereby the data is sometimes being restored instead of backed up at the end of the day - he is going to speak to sage and come out to look at the situation next week. As I seem to be losing a whole days work at a time and the transaction no. shown reverts to one at the end of a previous workday with no trace of the missing data I'm inclined to agree with him - I think the whole file is somehow being over written rather than patches of data "evaporating" into thin air! - I have printed your replies and will show them to the installer when he comes - it is possible that there could be a mapping problem, though I'm not aware of more than one copy of sage being installed on the machine.
