I think the best thing is just plenty of practice. Do as many past papers as you can, do them more than once if you've time, and things will start to stick.

With the variances, try to think of the logic behind them - what is it you are actually trying to measure?

If you want some revision notes and practice exercises targetted towards the exams, you can buy them for £10 per unit from www.aatrevision.biz

Good luck!

My tutor learnt me a good way to remember the fixed overhead variances. email me on bigste@corsasport.co.uk and I'll reply with an attachment. I have the formula set out in a microsoft Word document.

Hiya, (apologies if you have read this reply on the technical forum)

A very good friend of mine came up with the ingenious solution of P-U-R-E: Price, Usage, Rate, Efficiency.

Everyone can remember total Variance of (act @ act) - (std @ std)

Materials:
P (act @ act) - (act @ std)

U (act @ std) - (std @ std)

Rate and Efficiency are now the same:

Labour:
R (act @ act) - (act @ std)

E (act @ std) - (std @ std)

Its really quite easy if you can remember it like this (well I think so) as it follows a pattern :) Always try and do you total variance first as it acts as a check for the variances.

Hope this helps - I really do find variances easy now

Think P-U-R-E thoughts in your exams!

Mandy
