View Full Version : A couple of moans

Would it be possible for folks:

1. To post in the appropriate forum - for example, I can't see what many of the topics in this forum have to do with online web services.

2. To have a look and see if there's a thread where the topic you're interested in is being discussed before you start a new topic. It's what the search button is for.

There are many forums where posting in the wrong place or starting duplicate threads would get you flamed to a crisp - I'm far too polite to do that but things are getting a bit cluttered round here. Maybe it's time that the powers that be (Julian) put a few guidelines in place.

OK, moan over - my usual smiling self will be returning shortly.

Chris

I'm 100% with you.

I cannot believe some of the places I find posts

There have been a couple of instances where one poster has decided to post the same question on several forums. On many boards, that would count as trolling and could get you banned.

Got my vote to!

Most forums have official moderators, are there any here? Ones that have powers to move threads, lock threads and indicate to users where they could make better use of the forums?

Have to confess I've just done this, until I read your message I hadn't taken any notice of what the search button was for.

We all use the forums to try and help each other, someone even noticed I'd put my email address on one of my messages last week and emailed me to ask a question. Even though I'm really busy at the moment and had replied to similar messages over the forum, I replied to the email.

I would also like to think if I put a question on that had been asked previously, that someone would be kind enough to reply to my message. When you work on your own, sometimes it nice to have someone answer your specific question, rather than a similar question that had been asked previously.

Hello everyone,
point duly taken - I've moved the threads that weren't relevant to the online services out to the Students General forum.

As to your question about moderators lincs, we do have several people around the AAT who keep an eye on the forums regularly (it seems I must be the chatty one!), but we don't often act as normal moderators (i.e. moving threads etc.) Mostly we're here to answer questions where appropriate, but obviously we do have to remove the odd post.
As a general rule, we prefer the forums to be a place for open discussion, rather than us leaping in all the time - there's some more info about this in the forum terms and conditions at the top.

However, having said that, if you do spot something that is causing an annoyance like threads in the wrong forums, do feel free to let us know and I can do the traditional moderator tidying. That also goes for things like threads which you think are really helpful at a particular time. Let me know and I can lock it in place so it doesn't get lost on page 9 of the forum :)

I am sure you all have done some sort of accountancy and budgeting. This must have taught you that for a successful organization, cost control is of paramount importance. Therefore, you can't have a full-time moderator who would cost an arm and a leg to the AAT which will ultimately be bornes by AAT members and students.

Hope this helps.

As far as I know moderators are usually known responsible volunteers, and are not paid.

so, xfsgpr, I hope this helps you!

Perhaps we could have an automatic email sent to new memebers with a very quick and concise list of forum etiquette as not every is aware of such things.
I think the shorter and sweeter the better otherwise no-one will read it.

yeah - I hold my hand up.
I too have put a topic in the wrong place - apologies.
my only excuse is that I am new to the Forum.
It won't happen again - honest

But if you assume that not everyone reads every forum, might you be tempted into posting the same topic elsewhere?

PS I haven't posted this anywhere else - honest Guv!

New posts are a different colour - the only way to get them to change back is to read them!!
