Become an AAT fellow member
Many of our full members progress to fellow membership, giving them recognition of their loyalty, experience and continued standards of professionalism.
Designated by the letters FMAAT, fellow membership demonstrates to your employer and to the general public that your high standards and dedication are recognised by the AAT.
In addition to this recognition and status, fellow membership will:
- demonstrate your commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) and professional standards
- entitle you to receive and display a certificate of fellow membership
- enable you to be an accepted signatory for reference purposes on UK passport applications
- entitle you to use the designatory letters FMAAT
What is required to become a fellow member?
In order to become a fellow member, you must have a minimum of five years' senior experience, gained since becoming a full member of the AAT.
We are unable to count experience gained during a period of lapsed membership.
You will need to ask your current, or most recent employer, or if you are a member in practice, a qualified accountant, to act as your referee.
Your referee needs to have known of your work experience and be willing to vouch for your suitability for fellow membership.

What are the fees?
You will need to pay an application fee of £45 when you apply. You won't start to pay a fellow membership subscription until your subscription is next due for renewal.
What if you don’t quite meet the requirements yet?
If you don't yet have five years' senior work experience, we can arrange to consider and record relevant periods of work experience gained to date, to help you achieve fellow membership status in the future. You can do this by using our Fellow Membership work experience log.
By logging your work experience with us, this will help you in a number of ways by:
- providing confirmation that experience gained to date is acceptable towards meeting the work experience requirement
- avoiding the problems associated with former employers who have ceased trading, or managers who have moved job and are not contactable
- helping you log work experience if you are working on short term contracts, as you can provide confirmation of experience at the end of each contract
- enabling you to have logged relevant experience even if you are taking or have taken a career break for any reason, been unemployed or in full time study.
