Getting the most from your CPD - Autumn 2008 Free Events

The AAT's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Policy has changed. This interactive workshop for full and fellow members is designed to give you an insight into the continuing professional development (CPD) policy. The workshop will be facilitated by AAT staff.

Workshop content:

  • Planning your learning and development effectively.
  • What the changes to the AAT’s CPD policy mean to you.
  • Sharing learning ideas and best practice.
  • How the AAT will support you.

The Companies Act 2006 : An overview

The Companies Act 2006, which received Royal Assent in November 2006, replaces almost all earlier companies legislation and updates company law to ensure that it reflects the modern business world. Full and final implementation will be by 1 October 2009, but many provisions have already been commenced.

This presentation outlines the main changes, with a focus on aspects of particular interest to accounting staff.

  • an overview of BERR's objectives (eg think small first; better regulation) in CA2006, and
  • overview of the requirements of CA2006, with
  • an update on the implementation timetable,
  • followed by - focus on items of likely to be of specific interest to preparers of company accounts, eg
  • accounting regulations
  • capital reductions
  • Companies House and electronic filing for abbreviated accounts.

Professional Ethics Workshop

The ethics workshop gives you an insight into how to resolve ethical issues and develop your understanding of how you would deal with difficult situations. It will also be a good opportunity to share your experiences with other AAT members.

  • What are ethics and why are they important?
  • What are the fundamental principles included in the AAT’s ethical guidelines?
  • What particular guidance needs to be understood by various categories of AAT members?
  • How can you recognize threats to your ethical position, and what safeguards may help?
  • What legal issues do you need to consider?

Guidance in this session will be through lecture sessions including consideration of some typical scenarios and plenty of opportunities for questions.

Branch events

The AAT branch network is a valuable part of our support framework, offering student, affiliate, full and fellow members support, advice and useful events.

There are 45 active branches, split in to 11 regions located across the UK and 6 international branches. Each one offers relevant, high quality, accessible and affordable continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities through local and regionally organised events, a large number of which are free.

Branch network events will help you learn new and develop existing skills. They range from short taster and update meetings to more in-depth courses and conferences. The branch network events are also an opportunity to meet other AAT members and accounting professionals in your area, and a great way to meet new friends with similar interests.
