How much will it cost?

Below you can find information about the fees associated with being a student member of the AAT, as well as the cost of sitting examinations.

Information on this page is valid from September 1st 2006

Membership fee

There is a one-off admission fee of £30 (please note that if you have been registered with the AAT prior to September 1st 2003, and are re-registering, this fee does not apply).

All AAT members pay an annual membership fee, which is due at registration:

Student and affiliate members - UK only £66

Student and affiliate members elsewhere £55

An additional registration fee of £10 is due if a student member wishes to take both the AAT Accounting Qualification and the NVQ/SVQ in Payroll Administration.

Your annual membership entitles you to a range of benefits including:

  • the monthly magazine Accounting Technician and its online version. Accounting Technician includes study tips, a jobs database, assessment advice and technical articles
  • access to the Student Services helpline
  • the Students section of this site, including discussion forums
  • news about events at your local AAT branch
  • a range of support materials such as your Student Record, past papers, statements of achievement and the Student Handbook

Exam fees

You will also need to pay a fee to sit exams for your AAT qualification.

The exam fee does not apply to skills test (previous known as devolved assessments), only exams (previously known as central assessments), and it may sometimes be included in your centre's tuition fees.

The amount you pay varies according to the level of exam you are taking. The current exam fees are:

  • Foundation (NVQ/SVQ)/Certificate (Diploma) level exam fee £36
  • Intermediate (NVQ/SVQ)/Advanced (Diploma) level exam fee £38 per exam (two exams)
  • Technician (NVQ/SVQ)/Diploma (Diploma) level exam fee £40 per exam (three exams)

If you are unsure which fees may be applicable to you, or if you have any other questions regarding fees, please contact Student Services by calling 0845 863 0801, or by e-mailing studentservices@aat.org.uk

Employer support

In a recent survey of AAT student members (Technician stage) 86% received some sort of financial support from their employers; either the payment of their AAT membership fee, their college fees or both. You should talk to your line manager or personnel manager about what kind of support your company would be willing to give you. The majority of employers will offer some support. Options include:

  • Day release/study leave (letting you study without using up holiday)
  • Block release (as above, but a number of days together ? usually only companies with a number of students will be able to offer block release options)
  • Payment of college fees
  • Payment or the supply of support material such as textbooks, professional magazines or study aids
  • Payment of the AAT membership fee
  • Help in portfolio building
  • Experience in other departments or sections (for instance by job shadowing or job swapping - again this is most often only an option for larger companies)
  • Coaching and mentoring, offering technical accountancy help

Government funding

The government and other agencies also offer support for those undertaking training or lifelong learning. More details can be found here in our funding help page

About the AAT's fees

Please note that the AAT is a not-for-profit organisation which exists for the benefit of all its members. This means that it does not seek to make a profit from any membership charges. The AAT accounts are regularly monitored by a panel of full and fellow members to ensure that the charges made by the AAT are fair and legitimate, and are published in the AAT's Annual Report.
