Membership levels

By becoming a student member of the AAT, and by gaining an AAT qualification, you demonstrate to potential employers and clients your commitment to the highest standards and technical knowledge.

An AAT qualification is widely recognised and valued; it will help to make you more employable and give you more options should you choose to progress still further. Student membership is your first step in a relationship that will greatly enhance your career from its beginning to its end.

There are four stages to your membership of the AAT.

Student members

Student members are those who are currently studying for one of the AAT's qualifications.

Affiliate members

Affiliate members are student members who have fulfilled the AAT's educational requirements for full membership. Usually this means that an affiliate member has completed the AAT's accountancy qualification (the Education and Training scheme) but alternative qualifications are recognised. A list of alternative qualifications can be found here. Affiliate members are usually waiting to gain the work experience needed to apply for full AAT membership.

Full members

Full members are those who have completed all educational and work requirements and have requested and been elected to AAT full membership. The AAT maintains high entry requirements for full membership to ensure that employers and others can be sure that an AAT full member is a well qualified and competent accountancy professional. Full members can use the letters MAAT after their name.

Fellow members

Fellow members of the AAT are members with at least five years full membership and who can demonstrate senior supervisory or management responsibility and a commitment to continuing professional development. Fellow members can use the letters FMAAT after their name.

Your AAT qualification can also be a stepping stone to chartered and certified accountancy, to university accountancy courses or even if you are moving overseas.
