Yesterday (Thursday 12 May), AAT was recognised with the award for outstanding contribution to taxation by a non-profit organisation, at the Tolley’s Taxation Awards 2022. The honour was awarded to AAT for the Accountable campaign, tackling the issue of unregulated accountants and the damaging impact they can have on customers.

Tolley’s Taxation Awards is an annual event, recognising great work in a range of categories across the tax profession. The celebrations took place at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

AAT’s Director of Professional Standards and Policy, Adam Harper, said:

“We’re of course disappointed to not be taking home the Tolley’s award for outstanding contribution to taxation by a not-for-profit organisation, however we are so proud to have been nominated and we offer a huge congratulations to Women in Tax on a well-deserved win.

“It means a lot to us to be nominated for this award by others who backed the campaign, and it’s great to see that our message really resonated across the sector.

Our Accountable campaign centred on the call for all accountants to be subject to regulation of a professional body – therefore held accountable. A world in which all accountants are regulated ensures not only that they are properly qualified, but also that consumers are protected, which is vital for their financial security.

It was encouraging to see the widespread coverage that our campaign received and the impact that it continues to have on public opinion. In December we were pleased to see the government drop the compulsory Professional Indemnity Insurance proposals, recognising that this is not an adequate action. We hope that this campaign and our work as a sector going forward will lead to all accountants being qualified and regulated, for a better and more secure future for all.
