AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) has developed, in conjunction with IFAC (the International Federation of Accountants), an illustrative competency framework for accounting technicians to be used by professional accounting organisations worldwide.

The resource, which draws on the results of extensive consultation with IFAC member bodies as well as AAT’s existing competency framework, underlines the skills and benefits required by accounting technicians. It also sets out the knowledge required in order to produce a competent and future-ready accounting technician workforce.

Research from IFAC has indicated that there is a shortage of basic accountancy skills within developing and emerging markets in particular. An accounting technician qualification regularly provides a strong entry point into the accounting profession as well as a progression career pathway. The development of professional accounting technicians can genuinely help to fill this skills gap.

Mark Farrar, AAT Chief Executive said:

Qualified accounting technicians can be the foundation of good financial management for organisations across the world.    We hope that professional accounting organisations will consider utilising the framework in order to produce skilled accounting technicians in their local markets.

Joseph Bryson, IFAC Head of Quality and Development, said:

IFAC hopes that every professional accountancy organisation with an interest in the accounting technician qualification shares their experience and helps to grow this important segment of the global accountancy ecosystem.
