AAT to recruit a new Chair
7 May 2026

In April 2025, AAT launched its new skills-based Trustee Board aligning with the enhanced standards set by the UK’s Charity Governance Code 2020, raising the bar for excellence in governance and ensuring AAT is future-ready. As AAT’s most senior decision-making body, the Trustee Board has responsibility for governing the organisation and, in addition to the Chair, comprises of 11 non-executive directors (at least 20% of the Board being AAT members). The Board has a clear focus on delivering the 2030 plan and creating a pathway for future sustainable success beyond 2030.
With a mandate to embed a new governance structure and secure AAT’s future relevance, Stephen leaves AAT’s Board in a strong position to navigate AAT through the coming years. Stephen will be leaving his role as Chair at the end of May 2026.
Sir Stephen Hillier commented: “AAT has set a clear and ambitious plan, a significant part of that has been in building AAT’s new governing structure, which had remained largely unchanged for nearly a decade.
Bringing together the breadth and depth of talent that we have today in AAT’s Board of Trustees has been a privilege, as has working closely with the leadership team of AAT. Together, we have achieved a huge amount in the 14 months that I have worked with AAT. I’m very proud to have been part of the AAT journey and I depart with AAT in a strong position and with an exciting future ahead of it.”
