AAT has announced that Ali Jaw FMAAT has been named as the winner of the Past Presidents' Award for 2020.

The award is presented by the outgoing AAT President to an AAT member who has made an exceptional contribution to AAT or brought credit to AAT by their service or example. The award also highlights what AAT's membership can collectively achieve, and the impact and reach AAT members have in terms of making a difference to others, as well as to the accountancy profession as a whole.

Ali was elected as a member of AAT in 2011, having previously moved to the UK from The Gambia to finish his studies, and became a fellow member (FMAAT) in 2016. He was recognised for his critical role in setting up AAT's Hereford and Worcester branch, holding the roles of Treasurer and Vice-Chairman and helping the branch to achieve the Branch of the Year Award in 2019. Additionally, Ali has contributed to a number of AAT Comment articles, sharing his experiences as a member to help inspire others, as well as featuring in case studies and videos, and on AAT's website as part of promotional campaigns.

On receiving the Award, Ali Jaw said: "I am really honoured and grateful to be awarded such a prestigious award. It means a great deal to me and goes to show that with the support of a world-class institution such as AAT, and if you believe in yourself, follow your dreams, stay consistent and work at your craft, you can achieve great things, regardless of your background or start in life. Thank you AAT for arming me with the tools to be confident in my ability and help me achieve my full potential."

AAT Past President David Frederick added: "Ali particularly impressed the panel due to the breadth of his involvement and the willingness he has displayed to help influence other AAT members and students. He has made an outstanding achievement along with enhancing the reputation and prestige of AAT, and I am delighted to have presented him with this year's award."

Ali was presented with the award by David Frederick at AAT's AGM in September 2021. Heather Hill has been installed as the 41st President of AAT, succeeding David Frederick in the role.
