AAT Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship standard v2.0

Professional accounting technicians may work in the accounts or finance department of an organisation or a professional accountancy firm.

The broad purpose of the professional accounting technician is to prepare, coordinate and implement accounting tasks that support the creation of financial statements.

The new reformed Level 4 Apprenticeship Assessment plan for ST0003 v2.0 was approved and published on the 27 July 2026.

At Level 4 we are introducing a more streamlined assessment model that removes unnecessary duplication.

Apprenticeship Assessments

The reformed apprenticeship assessment will consist of:

  • a mandatory role scenario
  • a computer-based knowledge test.

The role scenario enables apprentices to demonstrate how they apply their knowledge, skills and behaviours in a realistic workplace context, while the knowledge test provides an efficient and reliable method of assessing technical knowledge.

To further reduce duplication, apprentices who successfully complete the role scenario assessment and are studying the AAT Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician qualification may be exempt from the Advanced Business Awareness (AVBA) unit assessment, subject to AAT’s assessment requirements.

Support resources

The below resources have been designed to assist with the delivery and completion of the Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship.

Funding

The Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship standard v2.0 has a maximum funding band of £12,000.

Funding for this apprenticeship will be administered and managed by the employer and spent with the chosen training providers.

Delivery options

A full-time apprentice typically spends 18 – 24 months on-programme, in training before gateway to completion, working towards competence as a Professional Accounting Technician.

Gateway to Completion

There are two very distinct components of the apprenticeship journey:

  • On-Programme Learning (OPL), and
  • the apprenticeship assessment.

Gateway to completion is the checkpoint at the end of an apprenticeship programme to ensure that the apprentice has completed all necessary requirements and is ready to receive their certificate.

Apprentices who use the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting as part of their on-programme learning will be eligible to apply for full AAT membership, meaning they will gain their apprenticeship and the use of the designatory letters MAAT.

Apprentices who only complete the apprenticeship assessment for the Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship, not using the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting as part of their on-programme learning, are not eligible to apply for full AAT membership.
